Furniture Care & Maintenance Guide

Product Care & Maintenance Guide

Thank you for purchasing fine furniture from The Bob Timberlake Gallery in Lexington, North Carolina. Each piece is crafted with care and designed to bring comfort, beauty, and lasting quality to your home. Proper care will help your furniture look and perform beautifully for years to come.

GENERAL CARE FOR ALL FURNITURE

  • Placement: Avoid direct sunlight, heat vents, and moisture sources. Sun and heat can cause fading, cracking, or warping.
  • Cleaning: Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or all-purpose cleaners.
  • Humidity: Keep indoor humidity between 35–45%. Too little or too much moisture can affect wood and upholstery.
  • Level Surfaces: Ensure furniture is placed on level flooring to prevent frame stress or door/drawer misalignment.
  • Rotation: Rotate cushions and rugs regularly for even wear and fading.

UPHOLSTERY

  • Vacuum Weekly: Use a soft brush attachment to remove dust and dirt.
  • Spot Clean: Blot (don’t rub) spills immediately with a clean, dry cloth. For deeper cleaning, follow the fabric’s cleaning code (W, S, WS, or X).
    • W: Use water-based cleaners only.
    • S: Use solvent-based cleaners.
    • WS: Either type is safe.
    • X: Vacuum only; no liquid cleaners.
  • Cushions: Rotate and fluff loose cushions weekly to maintain shape.
  • Avoid Sharp Objects: Keep pets’ nails and belts or jewelry away to prevent snags.

LEATHER

  • Regular Dusting: Use a dry, clean microfiber cloth weekly.
  • Conditioning: Every 6–12 months, apply a high-quality leather conditioner to maintain softness and prevent cracking.
  • Spills: Wipe spills promptly with a soft cloth; avoid soaking the leather.
  • Avoid Cleaners: Never use ammonia, bleach, or oil soaps.
  • Heat & Light: Keep leather at least 2 feet from heat sources and out of prolonged sunlight to prevent fading.

WOOD FURNITURE

  • Dust Frequently: Use a soft cloth slightly dampened with water or a gentle wood cleaner.
  • Polish Sparingly: Use a non-silicone, non-wax polish only when necessary.
  • Protect Surfaces: Always use coasters, trivets, and placemats.
  • Drawers & Doors: Keep hardware tightened periodically and avoid overloading drawers.
  • Temperature Control: Wood expands and contracts; consistent indoor temperature prevents cracks or splits.

MOTION FURNITURE

  • Operate Smoothly: Recline slowly and avoid forcing mechanisms.
  • Keep Clear: Make sure no cords, toys, or pets are under footrests.
  • Lubrication: If motion feels stiff, use a dry silicone spray on metal joints (avoid getting on fabric).
  • Electrical Components: For power units, unplug before moving the furniture. Use surge protection.

RUGS

  • Vacuum Regularly: Without beater bar or on a gentle setting.
  • Rotate Every 6 Months: Prevents uneven fading and wear.
  • Spot Clean: Blot spills immediately with mild detergent and cool water.
  • Professional Cleaning: Recommended every 12–18 months.
  • Rug Pads: Use a pad underneath to prevent slipping and extend life.

ADDITIONAL TIPS

  • Protect from Accidents: Consider fabric protection plans for added peace of mind.
  • Moving Furniture: Always lift—never drag—to avoid leg or frame damage.
  • Warranty Questions: Each brand carries its own limited warranty. Keep your sales receipt for reference.
